650nm-laser-diffraction-research-kit-solo
650 nm Laser Diffraction Research Kit, Solo (1 Observer)

The Solo is the kit for the DMT laser experiment, also searched as the laser protocol, the 650 nm laser code experiment, or the laser diffraction protocol. Everything below is the equipment that protocol calls for. The observation was first reported by Danny Goler; the written protocol that grew out of it is free at dmtcode.com.

Everything one observer needs to run the 650 nm diffraction observation protocol at home: a red laser, a stand that holds it on, gratings that split the beam into ordered points, and the acrylic set that spreads it into a single continuous line on the wall.

Making the line

Clamp the pointer in the stand so the button stays pressed. Put the semicircle acrylic piece in the beam with its flat face toward the laser. The dot becomes a continuous horizontal line on the wall; move the piece closer to the laser for a longer line. Put a grating in front of the laser first to see the ordered points and the line together. Full setup steps are at dmtcode.com/prepare.

What is in the box

Deluxe red laser pointer, 650 nm

Class 3a pen style pointer, under 5 mW, 650 nm red. Brass body, momentary push button, ships in a hard case with two AAA cells installed. This is the wavelength the protocol was written around.

Adjustable laser pointer stand

Cradle that holds a pen style pointer and presses its button for you, so the beam stays on hands free. Height and angle adjust with a thumb knob. The customer photos on this page show how it is set up.

Three window diffraction grating, 100, 300 and 600 lines per mm

One slide, three ruled windows. Put each window in the beam and you see the single dot split into a row of dots spaced further apart as the line density rises. This is the grating that demonstrates diffraction orders. It does not make a line; the acrylic semicircle does.

Holographic diffraction gratings, 500 and 1000 lines per mm, 5 of each

Two five packs of 50 x 50 mm slide mounted gratings at 500 and 1000 lines per mm. Wider dot spacing than the three window slide, and enough spares to hand out to a group or replace a fingerprinted one.

Giant acrylic lens and prism set of 7, with case

Seven 15 mm thick acrylic optics with embedded magnets and a storage case: thin and thick double convex lenses, double concave lens, small double convex lens, rectangular block, 75 mm radius semicircle and a right angle prism. Every curved piece is a cylindrical lens, so it turns the dot into a line. The semicircle is the cleanest: lay it flat, aim the beam through the flat edge, and a continuous horizontal line appears on the wall. The flat pieces demonstrate refraction, reflection and total internal reflection.

Packaging and supplier

Kits are assembled from Arbor Scientific educational components and ship directly from Arbor's warehouse in Saline, Michigan. Expect Arbor branding on the packing slip, tape and individual product boxes. The packing slip does not show item pricing. Meridian Optics Lab is the seller of record; the observation documents live at dmtcode.com.

Safety

Lasers are Class 3a, under 5 mW. Never look into the beam or at a mirror reflection of it. Not for children 12 and under. Educational and laboratory use.

Attribution: the laser observation these kits are built around was first reported by Danny Goler (his page on dmtcode.com). Mr. Goler has no part in Meridian Optics Lab or this store, has not reviewed these kits, and endorses nothing sold here or published on dmtcode.com.
